At Elmwood Fitness Center, massage therapy is another way we are helping our clients achieve balance between the Mind, Body & Spirit - a balance that is essential to a happier, healthier life!

Therapeutic massage is an age-old remedy used by every major civilization from the ancient Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans. Many of the therapeutic effects of massage have been supported by scientific research. In addition to the commonly recognized benefits of relaxation, improved circulation and relief from muscle tension, new applications for therapeutic massage are surfacing in areas related to mental and emotional well-being, aging and improved immune system function.

Therapeutic massage has been known to aid in:

  • Improving circulation
  • Improving flexibility
  • Relieving arthritis pain
  • Relieving muscle pain
  • Reducing anxiety
  • Stimulating weak muscles
  • Reducing sinus pressure/pain
  • Promoting healthy skin
  • Improving immune system
  • Relieving tension headaches

Types of Massage:

Swedish – Using long, flowing centripetal strokes and varied pressure, this modality is extremely effective in reducing muscle tension, pain and injury while increasing circulation and relaxation. Swedish massage can leave you feeling relaxed, but energized long after your session is over.

Deep Tissue – Therapist uses arms, elbows, knuckles, as well as palms to apply the appropriate amount of pressure. The area to be worked on will be massaged to soften and warm the tissue, then more concentrated depth will help release chronic muscle tension, scar tissue, and adhesions.

Neuromuscular Therapy – A more detailed approach to deep tissue when dealing with specific problematic areas. This type of bodywork helps eliminate trigger points, restores postural alignment, increases flexibility to the tissues, and assists venous and lymphatic flow.

Hot Stoneuses the application of hot stones that are heated for relaxation and reduction of muscle tension. Stones are placed at specific sites on the client's body to promote relaxation and to help open up the energetic pathways.  Muscles are pretreated with the heated stones to allow the therapist to more easily perform deep tissue manipulations.

Massages are offered for 50-minutesd or 80-minutes.  Contact the front desk of Elmwood Fitness Center Harahan for pricing and scheduling at 504-733-1600.
